A couple of months ago I purchased my first crochet hook with an ergonomic handle. At first I wasn’t sure if I’d like it or if I’d be able to work with it. Somehow the big handled hooks looked like they’d be difficult to work with. But quite the opposite is true! I actually love my new hook!
To be honest, I love it so much that I use it on yarn that require a larger hook. You might have noticed that many of my new patterns are done in a G-4.00mm hook size – the size of my new ergonomic hook. (I just couldn’t put the hook down once I started using it.)
Anyhow, I ended up with three G hooks! When I went out to purchase my first G hook, many years ago, Walmart didn’t have any except for a kids’ hook. It just didn’t work right and I wasn’t happy with it.
So I went out and bought a Bamboo hook in a G size. I had heard a lot about Bamboo and thought I’d purchase one and see. The hook was awesome until I used it on this black yarn. The color rubbed off on the hook and totally ruined it!
Well, actually the hook still worked okay until I tried to clean it with some soap and warm water. Notice I said ‘tried‘ because I just couldn’t get the black dye out. But I did manage to totally ruin the hook. Not sure what happened but after that it too started to snag my yarn and I found it difficult to keep my tension consistent.
So I went looking for another hook. The only G hook on the shelf that day was the one with the ergonomic handle. I was reluctant to pay the high price, but now am glad for it. Who knows, maybe one day soon I’ll trade all my hooks in for a better handle.
If you haven’t tried one of these hooks before, you’ll be amazed at how well they work no matter how you hold your hook.
