What specific qualities will make you succeed in your business?
The only quality that truly will help me to succeed is that I enjoy designing crochet patterns. I love playing around with the yarn to see what looks right and what doesn’t, and eventually create something. I’m not very good at math or making sketches, so I often play around a lot before I get it right.
As for fashion, I really don’t know what is in and what is out. I simply design something that I like and take my chances. Google Analytics helps me to determine which patterns are hot and which ones are not, and so I try to go from there a lot of the time.
At the same time, I would love to design patterns for requests. I have done some, but I feel that I’m much more efficient if I work on my own inspirations.
I have no color co-ordination skills, which is why most of my patterns are done in one color. I figure that every crocheter is an artist, and therefore, will find their own way to re-create my patterns in different colors. 🙂
Q: Really write out what you bring to your business – do you have past job experience in retail?
A: No, (not unless a year at the dollar store counts). What I will bring to this business are lots of free crochet patterns, and eventually I might also start selling them. For now I want to focus on building relationships and get a following. I figure everything else will follow.
Q: Do you have experience-delegating employees?
A: No, although I have a team of pattern testers who have been helping me out over the past year.
Q: Are you good with math, accounting specifically?
A: This is a good one. I use my fingers and toes for simple additions, and my calculator is always nearby when designing a pattern. I have no skills in accounting whatsoever. Honestly, I have no idea why I’m so terrible at math because it was one of my favorite subjects in school, and I always got A’s. But I did mindless factory work for too long and now I’ve lost what I learned.
Q: Do you have an insatiable will to complete what you’ve begun?
A: Yes! Absolutely! This is who I am and what makes me happy. If I don’t follow through on that, then I will never be all that I can be.
Q: Why will your business succeed?
A: Because I will work hard when I can and give it my absolute best shot!
So you can see that I lack a lot of business skills. It’s a bit discouraging, however, I refuse to allow my lack of education stand in the way of my success. I will learn it one way or another or outsource it once I have the funding to do so.
